A Webmaster is a person who is a web generalist with expertise in all aspects that pertain to operations of a website.  Some of the roles that a Webmaster will occupy include:

Developer

  - overseeing construction &  maintenance of a site.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

  - essential to marketing a site on the web.

Site Administrator:

  - DNS administration

  - Domain Admin Access

  - Creating Subdomains

One aspect of a good webmaster outside of hosting and daily webmaster functions is the naming of your domain.  This is also a key element in a successful search engine marketing campaign.  If your website name would equal exactly the keywords in a search, your site will come up above all others with an equal Page Rank (see below for an explanation of Page Rank).  If you want to search for domain names and have some good alternatives suggested to you try this:

Enter a Domain Name:

www.

Now that I have defined the "what is" a Webmaster I will give you some ideas to consider for the "where to" host and some "how to" tools and tips.

Hosting:

Some key elements of successfully hosting a website are:

-  Utilizing a provider with a 99.9% Uptime Guarantee On Network,

FREE 24x7 rapid account setup

FREE 24x7 monitoring

World-class Data Centers

-   Best-of-breed routers, firewalls & servers

-   24x7 onsite physical security

You do not have to be a superhero to successfully administer a website.  This becomes more evident when you have many GUI (graphical user interface) based tools that take away some of the complexities.

Below is a listing of links to some useful webmaster tools & articles with most of the tools concentrating on Google Search Engine Optimization.  The reason behind this is that Google has about 49% of the Internet search engine traffic wrapped up.  Then the next search engine to concentrate on is Yahoo who has a little over 20% of the Internet's search engine traffic.  Statistics taken from http://www.networkworld.com/news/2006/042406-google-yahoo-expand-search-market.html?prl.
